I’ll encourage everyone to learn more about how this works and why it will benefit you when you hit 57 years (N/B: UK state pension is only paid when you hit 65/67 years old, and the amount paid is dependent on your years of NI contribution - at least 10 years to qualify. Whereas you can access your private pension from age 55 currently). Most newly arrived immigrants would be in their 30s, so have very good opportunity to start contributing to their private pensions early. Rule of thumb for contributions is: a % of your gross income equivalent to half your current age (So @ 34 yrs old, you should aim to be contributing 17% of your gross earnings, inclusive of your employer contributions).

At least the basic needs of life are been provided for. The pension they are deducting from your salary is for your own benefits and when you leave work you can easily get it. Here in Nigeria after our pension are deducted, the government don't even remit to pension administrators, some have retired for the past 10 years no pension or gratuity yet they are deducting. Just thank God you are in a country where system is working

Enrolling for pension is a no brainer. Either you wish to remain in the country or not. Your UK pension can be claimed from anywhere in the world. Also, for me, the money removed from the salary into the pension pot is small in the grand scheme of things. Sadly, many people opt out because we don't plan for retirement early enough.

Pension contribution schemes is a grey area and it is dicey. I opted out in my first job cause i knew i was not going to be with them for 6 months. In my present job, I've contributed and will continue to do so while planning for retirement.

But what about if the employer refused to enroll employees for pension? What is the way forward in this situation?
